Man arrested for kidnapping child

An Eenhana man was arrested last Thursday and charged with the kidnapping of a one-year-old girl.

The incident happened at the Eenhana town centre at around 20h00.

The suspect, Shinana Moses (40), made his first court appearance in the Eenhana Magistrate’s Court on 2 April.His case was remanded to 7 August.

According to regional police, the toddler’s mother set the child down while she was attending to other errands and in a flash, Moses grabbed the girl and jumped into a taxi that drove in the direction of the Eenhana Okongo road.

Police were called to the scene and alerted officers at the roadblock where the vehicle was stopped and the suspect apprehended.

The toddler’s mother, who has chosen to speak to The Namibian anonymously, has confirmed the incident.She says she thanks God that her child was recovered and brought back safely.The driver of the taxi in which the suspect jumped knows the police, she says. 

“When the police caught up with them, Moses confessed that he is allegedly involved with rituals and that’s why he took the child,” she says.

Meanwhile, Ohangwena police commissioner Ottilie Kashuupulwa has cautioned parents in the region to always keep their eyes on their children.

“Let’s be cautious and watch our children at all times, the world is not safe anymore.”
