The High Commission of Malaysia donated over N$937 145 to the Windhoek Islamic Centre to assist with its operational costs.
Acting high commissioner of Malaysia Mohamad Yahaya says the donation will be used to alleviate the centre’s operations and soup kitchen cost for the next two years.
“The funds are meant for two year’s operational costs and for the soup kitchen that provides for not just Muslims but non-Muslims as well to enjoy a meal every Friday,” he says.
Yahaya was speaking at the official handover ceremony in Windhoek on Friday.
The centre’s general secretary, Armas Shikongo, says the centre has faced challenges of keeping its operations open.
“This is one of the major challenges we had. We have been struggling for quite some time and as an organisation, we cannot operate without funds,” he says.
Shikongo says N$895 545 of the donation is catered to the operations and N$41 600 will be used for the soup kitchen.
