Maintaining The Bar

It is a well-known fact that everyone, at some point in their lives, is working at maintaining some kind of reputation, status, job or raising the bar and getting to the next level – whatever it is they want to be known or remembered for after they are no longer alive.

Let’s face it, as much as we work so hard at reaching our peak position of honour, we still have people who do not appreciate our methods or hard work, and still assume we got to where we are through unfamiliar methods that I would rather not mention in this article.

Life is a journey and an adventure as a wise man once said. Whatever we choose to do, should be an enjoyable learning experience. We owe it to ourselves to have fun in everything.

Getting to the top and having everything under control should be something we should all opt for, but cautiously.

I would like to mention that in life we should not get too comfortable with pleasing people, and trying to make them happy, since we do not really owe them that. We should be very careful of people, some are happy with your level of achievements, some are willing to sacrifice their time and wisdom to make sure you get to the next level of your life. Some will be too busy for you – to the extent of not responding to your SMSes or calls. Some will prefer to derail you because they know you are capable of so much and they would prefer to see you fall. Again, let’s face it, others will pretend to like you as much as they are waiting for something to blow up in your face, and tell you they are disgusted by your presence in their lives.

I tell you it’s a funny world we are living in and, very importantly, let’s understand that on the other hand our status (the level at which we are in life) will at most times draw two kinds of people in our lives.

Those who are really and honestly for us, who want to see us prosper and those who pretend to like us and just want to associate with us for status.

People will greet you not because they want to, but because of the status you possess, others will prefer you go ahead of them in line, just so that they can feel that they are doing you a favour. So if you happen to find yourself in a position of honour, do not be too proud because everybody is opting to be on your team, for reasons only known to them. Rather stay humble while accessing the genuine people around you, who you can trust.

Choose to make your own cup of coffee, drive yourself to your area of destination, be the kind of person who does not need to depend on people just because they feel they are doing you a favour. We need to start embracing the fact that we owe it to ourselves to maintain our bar and that we do not get to the top for somebody or just to prove a point, but because we understand that we are building a legacy for which we will be remembered.
