Voters at Lüderitz prioritise job creation and projects such as the port expansion and green hydrogen ahead of the upcoming local authority and regional council elections.

They also emphasise accountability and positive government leadership.

One such voter, Johannes Hailulu, says he was “looking forward to the jobs that were promised as we all voted for the female president”.

President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has said the government aims to create around 500 000 jobs over the next five years.

Another voter, Biko Johannes, says his vote will be influenced by his desire for progress and success.

“I believe my previous vote and many people’s votes brought change to the community. Swapo won, so our country is still stable. The government and the president are doing good, and everything is positive so far,” he says.

He urges whoever wins to stay grounded and focus on delivery.

Community activist Jisreel !Naruseb says his vote in the upcoming elections will be influenced by the ongoing implementation of infrastructural development and nation building.!Naruseb appeals to candidates to serve everybody in their constituencies and not just those from their parties.

“Candidates will be representing their various political parties but it will be very important for you to understand that you are being voted for by the masses from your different constituencies,” he says.

“Your first and only priority must be to serve your people, serving them in all aspects of their daily needs.”

Former Lüderitz mayor Phil Balhao says a solid foundation was laid at the Lüderitz Town Council during his tenure.

“We massively improved essential infrastructure, including water storage infrastructure that is on the way, and the new Namibia Water Corporation Limited desalination plant that is also on its way.”

He says the council experienced challenges in addressing the housing backlog.

“I’m not making excuses, but this is also a cry for help from the central government, especially considering the major economic developments happening in Lüderitz in the near future,” he adds.

He advises candidates to prioritise the implementation of ongoing projects and partnerships.

Local authority candidate for Swapo at Lüderitz Ockert Theron says housing development is among the top three issues he plans to focus on.

“Our community needs more affordable and accessible housing. It’s critical to ensure that families have decent places to live and that housing policies support both current and future residents,” he says.

“Our coastline and port are major assets.Developing them can boost our local economy, create jobs and strengthen trade opportunities.”

Theron also plans to make Lüderitz a cleaner environment.

“Our local dumpsite is a serious environmental concern and a major eyesore, especially for international visitors. It’s negatively affecting health, tourism and the overall image of our town,” he says.
