The much-anticipated annual Lüderitz Crayfish Festival will return to the Lüderitz Waterfront for the 18th time from 29 April to 5 May.
The week-long event will be staged under the theme ‘Safeguarding Our Ocean Riches’.
Organisers say the festival, known for its lively atmosphere and tribute to the town’s seafood industry, promises an exciting line-up of entertainment, cultural displays and business opportunities.
Speaking to The Namibian last week, Salom Ndevahokwa, vice chairperson of the management committee of the Lüderitz Crayfish Festival Trust, said festival-goers can expect an unforgettable experience capped with music, displays and a new supply of Lüderitz’s flagship delicacy – crayfish (rock lobster).
“The main aim of the festival is to market and boost business and tourism activities, particularly to promote Lüderitz’s seafood abundance, and contribute directly towards the economic growth of the town,” Ndevahokwa said.
The entertainment programme boasts performances from local and international performers and while the final programme is not finalised, Ndevahokwa said music enthusiasts can look forward to music, comedy and entertainment for all ages.
The event features a secure ‘kiddies’ corner’, while business conferences, exhibitions, a beauty pageant and official ceremonies will be part of the festivities.
Apart from providing entertainment, organisers say the event boosts the local economy, providing a platform for businesses to showcase their services and products.
“The festival enables small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to harvest high income and profits owing to the big number of individuals attending. It also attracts new potential investors to the town,” Ndevahokwa stated.
Under this year’s theme, the festival trust has initiated mechanisms for the sustainable supply of crayfish.
“There will be a fair and orderly supply and distribution of crayfish to SMEs for profitable displays at Harbor Square. The selling and distribution will be regulated and monitored under [the trust’s] rules,” Ndevahokwa emphasised.
For safety, festival organisers will deploy security officers in collaboration with local police services.
“There will be ambulances and emergency services at different entertainment areas, especially for activities with high-adrenaline components like Spin City,” Ndevahokwa said.
