Lover stabs girlfriend, kills himself

JEALOUSY drove a Keetmanshoop resident to stab his lover several times before committing suicide by slitting his own throat yesterday.

Kronlein resident Eduard van Wyk (33) attacked his girlfriend and mother of his child, Shareen Campbell (30), at her mother’s house in the settlement. ‘When he came to my mother’s house, he said he had come so that we must talk, but suddenly he pulled out a knife and started to attack me,’ Campbell said, adding she only survived the knife attack because her mother and his relatives intervened. ‘My lover (Van Wyk) constantly accused me of having affairs with other men. On Monday I was forced to vacate the room we were sharing, because I could not take the arguments about me cheating any longer,’ she said. Campbell sustained five stab wounds to her back and arm, as well as a cut to the throat.After stabbing Campbell, Eduard van Wyk committed suicide by slitting his own throat. He died in the Keetmanshoop State Hospital yesterday. Yesterday was not the first time Van Wyk had attacked her, Campbell said.’In August 2007, he also stabbed me several times. During that attack I sustained 17 stab wounds,’ she said. ‘A case of attempted murder was opened, but I do not how he came off the hook on the attempted murder charges,’ Campbell added. According to Van Wyk’s mother, Magareth van Wyk, the couple had frequently argued about alleged affairs Campbell had with other men. ‘I advised my son to end the relationship and leave the woman alone, but he would not hear me,’ she said. luqman@namibian.com.na
