Local offshore company gets global oil certification

managing director Peter-John Sylvester

A NAMIBIAN-OWNED offshore support service company – Breakwater Offshore Services and Investments – will be able to work in oil exploration after securing international standards institution certification.

The company announced its new certification on 31 March, saying it had been awarded three international certifications which are valid until March 2029.

Compliance with international standards allows companies to work in Namibia’s growing oil and gas sectors.

“Achieving full International Organisation for Standardisation is a significant milestone for Breakwater.

As Namibia’s offshore industry continues to grow, we are proud to contribute as a local company that meets international standards and supports the evolving needs of the energy sector,” managing director Peter-John Sylvester says.

Marine support services are fundamental to offshore exploration as well as the marine sector in general.

Services provided by Breakwater include towing, subsea engineering assistance, offshore supply, and refuelling at sea.

“This certification positions Breakwater as a credible and competitive partner to international oil companies and contractors operating in Namibian waters, demonstrating that locally owned companies can meet global standards while working alongside international operators,” company spokesperson Angy Uumati says in a press release.

If international energy companies decide to invest in oil production in Namibia, offshore support services will be an additional area of growth of the economy, Uumati says.

Several foreign oil service companies have already opened offices in Namibia in advance of decisions made by TotalEnergies on the development of its Venus discovery.
