Gifted with a golden voice and a highly energetic stage performance, Namibians can prepare for an exciting evening of high-octane performances by the multi-award winning superstar.
The Weekender chatted to her about her life and music career…

Who is Lira?i’m a singer and songwriter. i started my career in 2003 with the release of my first album titled ‘all My Love’. i have since released a total of four platinum selling studio albums, two platinum selling live albums as well as two live DVDs – one of which is to date the highest selling DVD in South africa. My current DVD is called ‘The Captured Tour’ and it is africa’s first concert film.
What do you remember about your childhood?i remember a lot of things. i had an ordinary upbringing. i was raised by my grandmother for most of my formative years in Wattville. i moved in with my mother in Daveyton when i was 12.
What do you enjoy most about being a musician?i get the great privilege to do what i love for a living. My work also takes me around the world, which i enjoy very much.
What else do you do besides music?i’m a full time musician. all other things are an offshoot of my career as a musician, these include modelling, actingas well as motivational speaking
Have you always wanted to be a musician?in my early 20s i was working as an accountant, mainly because even though i loved music, i never thought i would pursue it as a career. it was only when the corporate environment proved to be very un-fulfilling that i decided to pursue my passion in music instead.
Who are some of your musical influences? My influences range from Stevie Wonder, who in fact made me want to become a good songwriter. Miriam Makeba who made me want to retain the uniqueness of being african in a global market and Sade for her classic femininity and timeless music.
How do you manage to remain so focused on your career? With great effort. None of this is by accident. I make a concerted effort to stay focused.
You’re in such great shape! How do you manage that?i’ve made many lifestyle changes over the years. i am pescetarian (Vegetarian who eats fish). My diet consists of 50 per cent raw foods which seems to maintain my energy levels throughout the day. i am also never sick. i cannot afford to live unhealthily as it really effects my livelihood.
How does married life treat you?Marriage treats you how you treat it. You build your marriage, it does not justhappen. My marriage is wonderful.
How do you manage to balance your roles as a musician and a wife?it’s simple. i work with my husband.
Isn’t it too demanding? My career is very much like running my own business so it is as demanding as anyone running their own business. The work is nothing compared to the reward of spending my life doing what i love. i feel very blessed.
What has been the best advice you’ve ever received?Battle scars are better to live with than to live with regrets. This is your life, so do what you love and do it often.
Which vocalists do you look up to?There are many. anita Baker, Mary J. Blige, Aretha Franklin and Miriam Makeba to mention a few.
What is your personal pick as the best song ever by a South African artist?’Papa’ by Sankomota. i have fond memories of this song. it still makes me stop what i’m doing and sing along.
What would be your dream collaboration?John Legend and Sade.
How does it feel to come back to Namibia?i was there earlier this year for a birthday holiday get away, i love Namibia. it is in my top three most unique african countries. The landscape and vegetation is a sight to behold. i have not performed in Namibia for several years, so i’m really looking forward to delivering a memorable performance.
What do you think is the strongest point of your performance?i strive to give my audience an experience. i like my audience to be moved by the music and the experience as a whole. i’ve got something wonderful in store for my Namibian fans! They can expect great music, great energy, all their favourite songs over the years and lots of passion! i cannot wait!
