Late fight spoils fine spectacle

TRUSTCO United stormed to a 56-17 victory over Reho Falcon on Friday night in a match that came to a fiery end with a fight when the players walked off the field.

Exactly who was involved could not be determined, but United coach Jood Opperman claimed on Facebook that he had been punched and kicked by Reho Falcon players after the match.

It was a poor end to an entertaining match that saw Falcons holding United to a narrow lead till the final quarter when United powered away with five late tries.

United scored eight tries in total to collect two bonus points and to temporarily move up to second place on the log ahead of Saturday’s matches.

Tuna Amutenya scored two and Neil van Vuuren, Lionel Nantes, Nandivatu Karuuombe, Morne Blaauw and Naude Neethling one each, while they also got a penalty try.

Captain Winmar Rust gave an excellent kicking display, converting all his conversions for a personal haul of 16 points.

For Reho Falcon, Enrico Benade and Reginald Araeb scored tries, while fly half Desley Beukes converted both and added a penalty.

Beukes put Falcons ahead with a penalty but United’s early pressure told when they scored two tries midway through the first half.

Flanker Neil van Vuuren barged over from a line-out maul, while they won a penalty try after their scrum overpowered Falcons.

Falcons staged a fine comeback and eighthman Enrico Benade went over after sustained pressure just before halftime.

United lock Lionel Nantes crashed over from a line-out early in the second half, but Falcons once again struck back when prop Reginald Araeb barged over to reduce the deficit to 21-17.

That’s the closest they got though as United pulled away in the final quarter.

Centre Tuna Amutenya showed a great turn of speed to score two tries, while wing Nandi Karuuombe, scrum half Morne Blaauw and eighthman Naude Neethling added the others.

It was a fine forward performance by United who dominated the scrums and had speed out wide, while Rust was a points machine with the boot.

Falcons displayed great resolve to reign United in until they ran out of gas in the final quarter.
