Labour ministry denies Nantu deregistration threats

There are no grounds for the claim that the Namibia National Teachers Union (Nantu) would be deregistered due to repeated requests from the labour ministry to submit outstanding annual reports for review.

Ministry of Labour, Industrial Relations and Employment Creation spokesperson Maria Hedimbi on Thursday said: “This was the last update we shared with the media last year, which was a call to all registered trade unions and employer organisations, and not specifically Nantu.”

She provided a copy of the press release she has referenced, dated 21 December 2023, titled ‘Labour Entities Lack Compliance with the Provisions of the Law’.

Nantu secretary general Loide Shaanika said the union is preparing a press conference to address the concerns.

“Kindly be informed that we will invite you to the press conference,” she said.
