Labour expert criticises government’s S&T Increase

Labour expert Herbert Jauch says the doubling of government subsistence and travel (S&T) allowances is a step in the wrong direction.

He was speaking to Desert FM yesterday.

“We don’t know the details of the S&T adjustment yet, but overall it’s definitely a step in the wrong direction. It’s a strange priority, and it smells like self-serving,” Jauch said.

He said when more money is spent on S&Ts, the minister of finance and public enterprises is likely to consider cutting funds elsewhere.

According to Jauch, “lavish” S&Ts create an incentive to travel unnecessarily.

“The S&T in fact should as a matter of principle only cover extra expenses a person might incur while travelling. It shouldn’t become a secondary source of income that incentivises travelling,” he said.

Jauch said the government must cut down on travels, because it could lead to abuse and work being undermined.

He said it is “very strange” that an outgoing administration in the last days of its term decides to increase S&Ts.
