Kwata Cricket Tournament in Outjo

OUTJO celebrated the Day of the African Child in style on Saturday with a successful fun day in the format of a mini-cricket tournament where kids came together at the Etoshapoort Stadium to play against each other.

The successful event attracted over 130 kids from all primary schools in Outjo from the age of eight years and older. The coaching was conducted by Cricket Namibia development officer Wilhelm Tuhafeni together with the assistance of some senior players who were also once part of the FNB Kwata Cricket in the past.

The fun day aimed at promoting cricket amongst the youth and teaching them basic aspects such as bowling, batting and fielding, while also promoting a healthy lifestyle and installing discipline and commitment in the youth.

This was the seventh time that a fun day was hosted in Outjo and over the past few months these days have attracted a huge number of children and created awareness of the sport in the community.

Outjo is grateful towards Erongo Foods Products, a company that has committed itself towards the development of cricket by always sponsoring the event with refreshments for kids after all the coaching activities were done.

Such events don’t only teach cricket or bring kids together from various schools, but they develop the sport and produce talents among the young children who are our future cricket players,” Cricket Namibia said in a statement.

Through these kind of programmes, Outjo has developed teams which are now playing hardball cricket in the u11 and u13 age groups, and these players have already attended national trials, with a few being selected in the national development teams.

“All these kids come from government schools and disadvantaged families, but Cricket Namibia has now ensured that they get equal playing opportunities,” the statement added.
