THE flood warning for the western reaches of the Kunene River remains current, as the water level continues to rise.
Last Wednesday NamPower opened one of the five flap gates of the diversion weir at the Ruacana Hydro Power Station to release the water flow. One of the scour gates – another mechanism for releasing water in normal times – is also open.On Friday, the water flow was measured at 982 cubic metres per second and it is expected to increase to roughly 1,100 cubic metres by today.NamPower has reissued an earlier warning that caution be exercised when travelling across the river or practising any water sports.Most of the water is flowing in from Angola, the river’s main catchment area, where heavy rains have been falling over the past two weeks.One of the scour gates – another mechanism for releasing water in normal times – is also open.
