Opuwo regional councilor Karee Mupia told The Namibian yesterday the government has not proactively engaged them on the recent cholera outbreak in the area.
So far, one case has been recorded, with the Ministry of Health and Social Services which has dispatched a team of experts to assess the situation on the ground.
Mupia told Desert FM yesterday he is unaware of the outbreak that health ministry executive director Ben Nangombe has described as serious.
“As far as I am concerned, no one came to me, the health ministry did not come to me … If the executive director announced it, then it might be true but I am not aware … they are supposed to come to me and tell me there is a case so I know the situation,” Mupia said.
Mupia was responding to questions on the town’s preparedness to deal with the outbreak.
The confirmed case is the country’s first in 10 years, since a cholera outbreak was declared in the flooded northern district of Engela in 2008.
