Kombat Mine gets new lease on life

The Kombat Mine in the Otjozondjupa region will restart operations later this year, according to its majority owner, New Horizon Copper (NHC).

Construction activities began earlier this month and the company intends to produce 60 000 tonnes of copper per month by the end of the year.

“After years of operational interruptions, this represents a break from the past, as we now rebuild together for the future. We are confident that this substantial investment into Namibian mining, together with a renewed operational approach, will bring much-needed stability to this operation,” NHC chief executive Rennie Morkel said during the construction commencement ceremony.

United Kingdom-based Horizon Corporation has committed to spending N$390 million to restart operations. It became a major shareholder after purchasing Trigon’s 80% interest in the mine in 2024.

Horizon Corporation operates through NHC in Namibia.

NHC founding shareholder Knowledge Katti calls the deal a “game-changer” for the region.

“We look forward to the profound transformation of communities in and around Kombat – especially those still living in ghettos without sanitation, proper housing or reliable water,” he says.

Katti’s Havana Investments continues to hold a 10% stake in the mine, with Epangelo Mining holding the remaining 10%.
