KLM Royal Dutch Airlines announced yesterday that it will expand its scheduled service in Africa to include Windhoek, Namibia. The flight schedule for the three existing flights to Luanda, Angola will be adapted slightly to make it possible to fly on to Windhoek and back after a short stopover, the airline said.
The flights to Luanda and Windhoek will be operated using Airbus 330-200 equipment, offering 243 seats. Flight KL0575 will depart on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays at 22h45 from Amsterdam, and arrive the next day in Luanda at 07h30 (local time). At 08h45 (local time), it will continue to Windhoek, arriving at 12h15 (local time). The return flight, KL0576, will depart on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Mondays from Windhoek at 17h40 (local time), and land in Luanda at 19h15 (local time). From there, the flight will depart at 20h40 (local time) and arrive in Amsterdam the next day at 05h20.
“Based on our strong position in Europe, you can see that we regularly find opportunities to strengthen our international position,” said KLM CEO Pieter Elbers. “Having extended our destinations on the North American continent this year to Salt Lake City and Miami, and to Colombo (Sri Lanka) and Astana (Kazakhstan), we have now added another KLM destination in Africa. We operate 55 flights a week to destinations in Africa,” he noted.
KLM described Namibia as both economically and politically stable. The attractions listed yesterday by KLM include the sand dunes of the Namib Desert, wildlife parks, and Namibia’s beautiful beaches.
Windhoek is KLM’s twelfth destination in Africa. The airline already flies to Luanda (Angola), Johannesburg and Cape Town (South Africa), Nairobi (Kenya), Kilimanjaro and Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), Entebbe (Uganda), Kigali (Rwanda), Lagos (Nigeria), Accra (Ghana) and Cairo (Egypt). Together with its partners, the airline serves 56 different destinations in Africa.
At the moment, Air Namibia also offers flights between Windhoek and Frankfurt. Condor Airways also offers flights between Windhoek and Germany. South African Airways and Lufthansa also offer flights to Europe via Johannesburg.
Early this year, Qatar Airways said it will introduce four weekly direct flights between Windhoek and Doha next month.
