Kizomba and semba nights connect communities, relieve stress

Wine Bar and Restaurant and Nice Dance Kizomba Academy have introduced ‘Kizomba and Semba Nights’ on Wednesdays.

Caiser Hilário Joaquim, the owner and founder of Nice Dance Kizomba Windhoek Acadamy and official host of the event, says the sessions unite kizomba lovers in Namibia on the dance floor – regardless of who they are or where they come from.

Nice Dance Kizomba Windhoek Academy opened its doors in May 2019 and specialises in traditional Angolan kizomba and semba dancing.

Joaquim says making the event a reality did not happen overnight.

“We have always wanted to host kizomba nights, but have been unsuccessful in finding a venue. Kizomba and semba nights are especially important to our students/clients as it is a way for them to dance kizomba with outsiders.

“For our students, you could say its their weekly practical exams to practice with other individuals.

“Nice Dance Kizomba Windhoek Academy approached The Wine Bar and Restaurant, hoping they could accommodate our social nights.

“We received the go-ahead from the restaurant and officially started on 1 November,” he says.

Joaquim says most people are familiar with kizomba and the sessions aim to help create awareness of the dances among communities.

“Everyone is invited for this experience. Everybody in Namibia can relate to kizomba. We are growing the kizomba community in Namibia by promoting these kinds of events.

“We urge the public to attend our sessions, because it is a great way to release tension. If there is one thing that unites people, it’s kizomba music and dancing the art,” Joaquim says.

He says the dance academy believes promoting kizomba in Namibia will create an appreciation of the art and at the same time contribute to a vibrant cultural scene, encouraging community engagement and a sense of identity.

“If you are a first-timer, expect a very welcoming environment. Expect yourself on the dance floor with one of the kizomba instructors from Nice Dance Kizomba Academy.

“The platform provides an enjoyable way to stay active and connect with others who share the same love for kizomba,” Joaquim says.
