The then president of Swapo, Sam Nujoma returned from exile to Namibia on board a plane from Ethiopian Airlines on 14 September 1989. Nujoma landed at the then JG Strydom Airport, now Hosea Kutako International Airport, outside Windhoek. Hundreds of supporters waited outside the fence of the airport area and next to the road leading to Windhoek. After stepping onto Namibian soil, Nujoma kneeled down and kissed the soil of his motherland.
