KNOWN for her achievements in the sporting arena, Charmaine Shannon is also a children’s sports coach who routinely arranges and hosts training camps and sporting events for them.
Seven years ago Shannon partnered Rotary Club Windhoek in using the community service club’s annual family-fun sporting event, The Namibian Pick n Pay Cycle Classic, as a vehicle to promote participation in sport by young Namibians from toddlers to teenagers.
The Kiddies Classic has become an important part of The Namibian Pick n Pay Cycle Classic, one of the country’s best loved family sporting events started in 1999 and now in its 20th year. Children of all ages can participate, even toddlers with a little help from grandparents. Everyone is a winner as all participants receive a goody bag and a participant’s medal.
The Cycle Classic takes place on Saturday and Sunday at the Hage Geingob Stadium in Olympia, Windhoek’s southern suburb.
Now an important part of The Namibian Pick n Pay Cycle Classic, Rotary Club Windhoek first launched Kiddies Classic to broaden the event’s appeal. Thereby making Cycle Classic a sporting event for the whole family, young and old.
From humble beginnings Kiddies Classic has grown and it is anticipated that more than 300 children of varying ages will participate this year.
A sports enthusiast, Shannon is passionate about working with children.
“There is nothing more satisfying than seeing a shy youngster blossom and gain confidence, through participation in sports.
“Building confidence from an early age lays the foundation, not only for success in the sporting arena, but also for cultivating good character traits,” said Shannon.
This year’s edition of Kiddies Classic takes place on Saturday morning. For the convenience of parents, there are three starting time slots to select from- the first at 09h30 and the subsequent two at hourly intervals.
Registration takes place at the venue on Friday between 17h00 and 19h00 or on Saturday, an hour before each race starts.
