Kidd Mario’s ‘Twisted Heart’

Kidd Mario’s third studio album, ‘Twisted Heart’, invites listeners to delve into a world of Afro-pop infused with a dash of Damara flair. His musical interests reverberate between hip-hop and house while impressively maintaining his roots in the process.

The young talent is respected for paying homage to Damara punch – having been nominated in the Namibian Annual Music Awards in the category alongside a nod in Afro-pop in 2017.

The album has been on the market for almost a year, with his music videos garnering attention.

Earlier this month, Kidd Mario dropped a video for his track ‘Supa Woman’ that was directed by Basement Films’ Edward Osman.

“The spirit of Africa travelled with her, never to leave her side, and once away, she has never forgotten her home, for she and Africa are one. That’s how I tell my story of our African women in my latest video ‘Super Woman’ – this is for all my African queens,” he said in a Facebook post.

The video features cutting-edge cinematography that catapults the quality of Namibian music videos to be on par with many others showcased across the continent. Warm vintage aesthetics come all too easy in a recipe to exude the ebony beauty he praises in the song. The song itself is poetry to black women who have been marginalised in the media for many years.

The artist sheds light on his sentimental side on this project, particularly on the track ‘!Guni/hoa ta ge’ featuring Western.

It’s a tribute to young Damara kids on the street, struggling to make ends meet. The song was composed in his native tongue and means ‘I am an orphan’.

“In this song we try to talk to the nation, to make them look at our kids on the street. We show them love and support by letting them know they are not alone. The song was aimed at reaching powerful people in the country. I got a few calls from parents appreciating the message.”

The 25-year-old, born Tangeni Keanu Haraseb, is inspired by Damara punch artist Michelle, Owoseb-Oab and Gazza.

Other projects he released include ‘Right on Time’ and his EP ‘On The Move’.
