Khomas region to host festival for 36th Independence Day celebrations

The Khomas governor’s office plans to host a youth-centred festival to celebrate Namibia’s 36th Independence Day on Friday.

Namibians will be commemorating the 36th Independence Day nationwide on Saturday, 21 March.

It will be held under the theme ‘Beyond 35: For a Prosperous Future.’

The Khomas governor’s office, in partnership with the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sport, Arts and Culture, the City of Windhoek and other stakeholders, will host activities such as cultural events, an innovation talent show, an Uhuru march and a music bash as an early Independence Day celebration.

The festival, NamFest@36, will take place at the heart of the city’s business district.

Over 1 000 participants will parade in the Uhuru march from Palm Tree Park to Zoo Park.

The Uhuru march aims to signify a vibrant display of unity, patriotism and national pride.

Deputy minister of education, innovation, youth, sport, arts and culture Dino Ballotti says the NamFest@36 will serve as a platform to empower young people through creative expression while reminding them of their roots.

“The Uhuru march, together with the planned activities, creates an opportunity for young people to showcase their talents and actively contribute to nation-building,” he says.

Khomas governor Sam Nujoma says: “These celebrations go beyond commemorating our independence; they are about strengthening unity and encouraging meaningful participation from all sectors of society.”

Over 50 free acts in music, poetry, dance, painting, plays and inventions will be exhibited, where winners will walk away with a combined N$15 000 in prize money.

Meanwhile, over 20 local exhibitors in art, craft, clothing and food will also be exhibiting their products.

Local artists such as The Dogg, Sunny Boy, PDK, Exit DJ, Stakes Boy, Wild Dogs, Vuyo, DJ Spuzza, Shax Champion, Golden and Ethnix Namibia will entertain attendees until midnight.

The night will end with a special hour of independence tributes dedicated to fallen artists such as Jackson Kaujuea, Pedrito, Willie Mbuende and Ras Sheehama.
