The Namport Khomas Regional Debate Competition concluded over the weekend in Windhoek, with 60 pupils participating from four different circuits.
The event served as a high-stakes arena for the region’s brightest young minds to engage in constructive social discourse.
“The competition is more than just a trophy hunt. It provides a robust platform for pupils to sharpen their critical thinking and public speaking skills,” Eldorado Secondary School teacher and assistant debate coach Ricky Howoseb said on Saturday.
The motions debated often touch on pivotal issues that influence policy at institutional, local, and national levels, proving that these young voices carry weight far beyond the classroom.
Out of the 60 participants, four pupils won.
One of the winners, Albertina Nangombe from Eldorado Secondary School, says it was an honour to walk away with a title.
“I enjoy debating. This means a lot to me as I get to partake in competitions on a national level too.”
Nangombe won female best speaker and overall best speaker, while Ravinias Silas from Windhoek High School won male best speaker.
The national competition is yet to be announced.
