South African media personality Khanyi Mbau has made history as the first African to be nominated for the international Netflix Reality Universe Superlative Awards.
The actress (39) earned a nod in the ‘main character energy’ category for her standout role on the reality show ‘Young, Famous & African’. The show, which features African celebrities navigating fame, friendships and relationships, helped catapult Mbau onto the global stage.
Taking to social media, Mbau announced her nomination with excitement and encouraged her followers to vote daily until 15 July.
“So excited to be nominated as the first African for the Netflix Superlatives. Vote for ‘main character energy’ … help me win!” she writes.
Speaking to TshisaLive, Mbau says this marks her first award nomination in her 23-year television career.
“I have never been nominated for any of my TV work. This means the world to me. Once I win, I plan on bringing it back home to my abundance angels. This win would be a symbol to my girls that giving up is never an option,” she says.
Known for roles in ‘Meet The Khumalos’, ‘Happiness is a Four-letter Word’ and ‘The Wife’, Mbau is no stranger to the screen, but she says the combination of acting, reality TV, and influencer work has opened even more doors.
“It’s given me access to the most influential people on the planet and educated me on life. It’s been an ongoing trip of self-discovery,” she says.
Mbau also credits her career for connecting her with people who have inspired her to grow and to give back.
“I have met key people who have inspired me to be better, want better and assist those around me selflessly,” she adds.
She is nominated alongside international stars Harry Jowsey, Jess Vestal, Ryan Serhant, Chrishell Stause and Jada Mclean.
Fans can vote once a day via Mbau’s social media until the awards close on 15 July.
