Kendo is not merely a martial art or a sport; it is an act of respecting others, disciplining oneself and training one’s mind and body.

This was said by Japanese ambassador to Namibia Shinichi Asazuma on Saturday, when he presented the Japanese foreign ministers commendations to Namibia Kendo Federation president Andre Pienaar for his efforts in developing kendo in Namibia.

“For over a decade, Pienaar dedicated himself to the promotion and development of kendo in Namibia.

“Despite the lack of sufficient instructors and equipment in Namibia, he has, with the support of instructors from Japan and Europe, steadily built up the environment, creating a foundation where kendo is enjoyed by a wide range of generations, from children to adults,” said Asazuma during the event at his official residence.

Kendo is a modern Japanese martial art that uses bamboo swords as well as protective armour. It has spread to many other nations across the world.

Asazuma said the commendation was an expression of the Japanese government’s gratitude and strong respect for his long-term research activities.

Pienaar thanked the ambassador for the assistance the federation has received from Japan, including the equipment used in the sport.

The presentation was witnessed by Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sport, Arts and Culture acting director of sport Irvine Ndjavera.
