Kavango West won the Namibian Newspaper Cup for the first time when they beat Otjozondjupa 2-0 in the final in Otjiwarongo on Monday.
A unified Kavango region won the tournament for the first and only time in 2014, but this was the first time that Kavango West won the coveted trophy since the regions split.
Their neighbours Kavango East were twice the losing finalists after the split – in 2018 when they lost to Omaheke, and last year when they lost to Zambezi – but this was the first time that Kavango West had won the tournament.
Striker Pius Kapwita was once again their star player as he scored both their goals to silence the home crowd at a packed Paresis Stadium in Otjiwarongo.
The first came early in the second half when fellow striker Daniel Amandu’s shot was parried and Kapwita followed up to slot the ball into the net.
Otjozondjupa pushed hard and had several chances to get the equaliser, but they could not capitalise and Kapwita put the issue beyond doubt when he scored from a quick counterattack in the dying minutes of the game.
Kapwita was a deserving winner of the man of the match award, while he also won the top goalscorer of the tournament award, but Otjozondjupa received a consolation prize when attacking midfielder Giovanni Gaingob won the player of the tournament award.
