The Katima Mulilo Town Council has so far temporarily relocated 15 families to Ngweze Community Hall after their houses were flooded as a result of heavy rains since January.

The families lived in mud houses at the Cowboy, Dairy, and Choto areas, making their houses vulnerable to water damage.

One of the relocated residents, Alice Sishango, says about 49 people are currently living at the hall.

She says although the tents provided cannot fully withstand the rain, it’s better than their homes.

“Our houses were completely submerged under water and we could not stay there. Therefore, we are grateful to the town council that helped us move here.

“We have access to water and electricity as well as ablution facilities,” she says.

Sishango says the group would appreciate mosquito nets.

Katima Mulilo Urban constituency councillor Kennedy Simasiku says unusual above-normal rainfall has wreaked havoc at the town.

He says they are in the process of gathering resources through the regional council to assist the affected communities.

“The rain situation is getting worse by the day as more and more families are affected. Unfortunately, the resources available are not enough to render assistance to everyone, because other constituencies are equally affected, so we have to share what little the regional council has,” he says.

Simasiku appeals to local businesses to assist the regional council with resources to help the affected communities.
