Katima Mulilo police officer denied bail after N$1 000 bribe

A police officer (37) was denied bail on extortion and corruption charges at the Katima Mulilo Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

The officer, Eric Simataa, who is a court orderly stationed at the Katima Mulilo Magistrate’s Court, was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly threatening an inmate’s parent to pay him N$1 000 or risk their son staying in jail.

Simataa allegedly committed the offence at Katima Mulilo between 9 December 2025 and 10 February this year.

The parent had paid the money, which has since been recovered.

Simataa is facing two charges: extortion and corruptly using his office or position for gratification.

He is due to appear for a formal bail application on 19 February and has opted to apply for legal aid.

He appeared before magistrate Laina Nambonga.
