THE Kasi Cup for informal soccer teams will be held at its traditional venue in Katutura this weekend, starting at 08h00 on Saturday morning.
The City of Windhoek together with sponsors Coca-Cola and Otb Sport, have helped the informal soccer fraternity to formalise the ad-hoc Kasi games into a league and a final informal settlement soccer tournament, fondly known as the Kasi Cup.
The Kasi Cup is the final knockout competition for the top eight teams in the informal league, which kicked off with 16 teams. The league is played in Katutura, on the available free pieces of land which the city still has available for the people of Katutura to enjoy.
The league and Kasi Cup itself are very popular, with thousands of people coming to watch their teams over the two days. For getting to the Top Eight of the league and progressing to the Kasi Cup, Otb Sport, Coca-Cola and the City of Windhoek have donated soccer outfits to all the participating teams.
The tournament brings informal soccer into a formal environment. It also offers an excellent opportunity for the first division to come and scout for players, said Wacca Kazombiaze Section Head: Sport and Recreation of the City of Windhoek.
Some of the teams, such as Eleven Champions have even managed to progress to the first division after having performed really well in the Kasi Cup.
Many of the players move up to the second or first division after playing at the Kasi Cup, and Gordon Pokolo, Sponsorships Manager at Coca-Cola, said he is glad that the tournament is gaining in popularity.
Brave United who defeated Havana City in last year’s final, are again looking forward to defending their title and winning N$5 000 in prize money, a trophy and gold medals.
The runners-up will receive N$3 000, while the third-placed team will receive N$2 000. The eight teams that will compete in the Kasi Cup are United Boys, Eleven Bullets, Brave United, The Lion, Havana City, Etunda United, Tiger Force and Ondobe Eleven.
