Kaboy Kamakili: From Custody to Comeback

Kaboy Kamakili

After a detention period of nine months, kwaito musician Kaboy Kamakili has emerged with a fresh outlook on life.

Kamakili recently shared thoughts about his future career, previous difficulties and his plans for making a comeback.

He says he became involved with alcohol and drugs and had some cases against him. The artist was recently released on bail after spending nine months in prison on cellphone robbery charges.

Kamakili openly speaks about his past drug use, particularly his use of crack cocaine.

“I was using drugs. But then I stopped. Using drugs is just a way of stopping yourself from achieving what you want in life. It takes away everything from you – your money, life, even your respect,” he says.

“I am a man now. I have stopped using drugs and I am concentrating on making something positive out of my life.”

Kamakili says his love for music has not waned. In fact, it has become even more intense.

This is apparent in his latest single, titled ‘Unmatched’, which is currently enjoying its time on local radio and social media platforms.

“People said I would never make it. They thought I would fall into pieces. But I am telling them that I was created as a star. God told me to never fear. I am a champion and this is my battle in life,” he says.

The singer cites his song ‘Dead Body Talking’, which speaks against sexual violence, as being part of his effort to fight against social evils through music.

“Kamakili is 100% Christian now,” he says. “This is why the devil always loses.”

Since his release on 25 February, he says he has received an influx of offers, including bookings at schools and several upcoming weekend gigs.

“When I was inside, things were calm,” Kamakili says. “But now that I am out, everything is bustling. They cannot put a true one down.”

Kamakili, who says he is moving to Angola for greener pastures, will be creating new songs and considering collaborations, with a few albums due for release soon.

He promises to deliver an improved and sharpened Kamakili – one who is strong, wiser and more dedicated than before.

“I am determined and ready to change,” Kamakili says.

To young people facing similar challenges, Kamakili says: “You should never surrender to life, regardless of your situation. You have a way out, so listen and understand.”
