Justice minister tables divorce bill

Yvonne Dausab

Justice minister Yvonne Dausab says the proposed divorce bill is not intended to destroy families but to help those in dire need, such as those in abusive relationships.

Dausab said this in parliament on Tuesday while tabling the bill.

“The bill contributes to keeping families together who want to remain together,” she said.

According to Dausab, no religion or community has the power to force those who want to divorce to remain married.

She further indicated that the bill considers the best interests of the children.

Dausab said the bill would allow spouses to divorce in the magistrates court, easing long travel distances for some.

“The current divorce bill would cost people over N$10 000 to N$20 000, which makes it hard for those that want to divorce,” she said.
