Just Not Cricket

Just Not Cricket

WHY is it, that whenever a report on cricket appears in The Namibian (last Friday) the reporter appends an earnest and laborious account of the rules of the game, with a disclaimer that of course he/she knows nothing about it? Is it to prove how thoroughly uncolonial and un-British he or she is, and how the readers are assumed to be? Cricket is widely played, understood and watched on TV in Namibia as in most other Commonwealth countries, so this kind of dissertation is not really necessary.

And why does this only apply to cricket? When a tennis feature appears, it is never accompanied by an explanation of the rules of tennis, even though I for one, have absolutely no idea why these frilly-pantied millionaires (to say nothing of the women) spend so much time bonking a ball at each other over a net.
