The FNB July Handicap 2023 at Okondjatu this weekend promises to be “an incredible event”.

The event will involve 30 jockeys, over 20 horse-racing clubs and 95 horses bred in Namibia and South Africa.

About 3 000 spectators are expected to flock to Okahatjipara Turf, also known as ‘The Home of the Professor Supporters Club’, to witness one of the most anticipated events on the Namibian sport calendar.

The event is made possible by First National Bank (FNB), which has made N$260 000 in prize money available for the competition.

Household names on the domestic circuit, such as Visigoth, Starlile, French Leave, Time Master, La Luvia, Able Surprise, Chief Helmet, Imperial Ruby, Rose Willow, and Don Piero are set to compete for the main prize of N$40 000.

“This sponsorship highlights the growth and significance of horse racing, which is one of the oldest and fastest-growing sports in the country,” Okahatjipara Turf said in a statement.

“A total of 17 races are expected to unfold throughout the day, offering an incredible spectacle for attendees to enjoy,” the organisers said.

“The FNB July Handicap 2023 promises to be a thrilling and unforgettable day for horse-racing fans, showcasing the skill, talent, and excitement this sport brings. With a growing following and prestigious sponsors, horse racing continues to captivate audiences and create memorable experiences for all involved.”

Gates open at 06h00, with the first race scheduled to start at 10h00.
