Julinho remembers businessman, sportsman Jaco van Dyk

Julinho Athletic Football Club is mourning the death Grootfontein businessman and sport enthusiast Jaco van Dyk, who was said to be a supporter, and ‘generous’ sponsor of the club.

Van Dyk (52) died on Saturday at around 21h00 in an accident on the B8 road between Otavi and Grootfontein, about seven kilometers from Grootfontein.

The police say Van Dyk allegedly lost control of his vehicle and hit a bridge, causing the vehicle to overturn.

He died after being ejected from the vehicle and he was alone in the car, the police say.

According to friends of Van Dyk, he was on his way back to Grootfontein from Swakopmund.

In a statement released by the club, Julinho describe Van Dyk as “a loyal supporter, generous sponsor, and true friend to all of us and of our club,” noting that his sudden death “leaves an irreplaceable void in our community.”

Van Dyk was known for his unwavering belief in Julinho’s vision and his consistent efforts to uplift not only the team, but the sport and those around him.

The club says his support went beyond financial contributions as he was deeply involved in the spirit and culture of the club.

“Our deepest condolences go out to his children, family, colleagues, and loved ones during this difficult time,” the club notes.

Julinho Athletic say Van Dyk’s legacy will live on in the players, in every match, and in every dream he helped build.

“Your dedication to the beautiful game and your faith in our journey will never be forgotten. May your soul rest in peace.”

Club owner and coach Nelson Luis echoed these sentiments, describing Van Dyk as “more than just a supporter and sponsor; he was family to Julinho Athletic.”

“His passion for the club went far beyond financial contributions. He truly believed in our vision of building a community through sport,” Luis says.

“Off the field, he was a mentor and motivator who genuinely cared for the players and management. His kindness, humility, and unwavering commitment created a lasting impact that shaped the hearts of many at our club.”

Reflecting on a memorable moment, Luis recalls the day Van Dyk wore the first Julinho shirt with his name on it and joked, “a ball should not be round,” referencing his rugby background.

“Yet, he embraced our mission and became one of our strongest supporters,” Luis says. “He reminded us that sport is not only about winning, but about building character.”

Although the team is in the offseason, Van Dyk’s death has struck the players deeply, Luis says.

“The players are heartbroken. He was a role model and a figure many looked up to. His loss is felt deeply, but it also strengthens our resolve to honour his legacy through our performance and conduct.”

Julinho plan to pay tribute during their first home game of the new season with a moment of silence. The club is also considering dedicating part of the season to his memory and exploring the creation of a youth development initiative in his name – a cause Van Dyk was deeply passionate about.

“To his family, we say thank you for sharing Mr Jaco van Dyk with us,” Luis concludes.

“His love, generosity, and passion for people will forever be part of Julinho Athletic’s story. His legacy lives on in every Julinho Athletic Premier League player who had the privilege to know him, and in every life he touched.”

Van Dyk in 2020 survived a helicopter crash in the mountains east of Windhoek near Heja Lodge.
