JuliArt hosts ‘Nude’ potjie experience

Food lovers with a daring and adventurous spirit are encouraged to join body positivity activist Julia ‘JuliArt’ Hango on her naked potjie experience.

The group dinner date and optional camping trip will see diners enjoying their meals and each other’s company while being completely naked.

The unique experience is aimed at those who feel comfortable in their skin, as the purpose of the event, according to Hango, is to offer a safe and welcoming space for closeted nudists and first timers looking to try something different.

The idea is not a new one. The 25 October gathering will be Hango’s third potjie enjoyed in the buff this year, a concept she came up with while trying to curate more body positive spaces in Namibia and create arenas for like-minded people to engage with each other.

“This is a continuation of my body positive spaces. I wanted to bring people together in a safe environment and just have them share. It is important to me to create a space for closeted nudists, as there are so many in Namibia,” she said.

According to Hango, guests will be expected to be completely naked from head to toe, but sarongs will be on offer for anyone who wants to create a comfortable boundary between people.

Dinner, which will be either a meat or vegetarian fire potjie, will be served from 19h00 and end around 23h00. Guests can arrive at the just-outside-Windhoek location (that will only be disclosed once you are a participant) from 17h30. Those who do not want to drive the 25km back to the city have the option of staying overnight, at which point clothes can come back on, as guests prepare to camp.

Those who are interested in joining the experience will be vetted meticulously by the activist and her team, in an effort to ensure that the space remains tasteful and safe for all participants. The number is also being kept to just eight people so as to ensure it is manageable.

“We are keeping the number of men equal to that of women, and mostly we are taking people who are participating in pairs, just to help ensure that feeling of comfort,” she said.

Hango ensures absolute safety and warns against any misinterpretations about the event, seeing that it involves multiple nude participants, in light of several strange queries she has received from the public since the event went public.

“This is not an orgy,” she joked, adding that it would be good, clean, non-sexual fun with a hearty meal and great fireside conversation.

Hango is the founder of the Body Positive Namibia movement and a controversial figure in the art world, often pushing the boundaries of displaying, celebrating and idolising the human body. She hosts nude painting sessions, creates nudist art and spreads a message of self acceptance.
