Judicial Service Commission to interview candidates for High Court position

Five senior magistrates shortlisted for appointment as a judge of the High Court will be interviewed by the Judicial Service Commission on Friday.

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) will conduct public interviews of the five candidates at the Supreme Court in Windhoek, Office of the Judiciary spokesperson Vikitoria Hango announced on Wednesday.

The five candidates are Marelize du Plessis, Elvis Mwilima, Victor Nyazo, Makapa Simasiku and Stanley Tembwe.

They have been shortlisted to fill one vacancy in the criminal stream of the High Court, Hango said in a statement.

She also said the JSC announced in September last year that four judicial vacancies are to be filled in the High Court – three in the court’s civil stream and one in the criminal stream.

Designated organisations representing the legal profession were invited to nominate candidates to be considered for appointment as judges, and after a first stage of evaluation, consisting of written assessments, the five candidates have been shortlisted to proceed to the interview stage of the assessment process, Hango said.

Du Plessis, Nyazo and Simasiku are regional court magistrates, based at Otjiwarongo, Windhoek and Oshakati, respectively.

Mwilima and Tembwe are divisional magistrates, based at Oshakati and Keetmanshoop, respectively.
