Namibian boxers Junius Jonas and Mathias Hamunyela have qualified for the Rio Olympic Games after winning gold and silver medals respectively at the African Olympic Qualification tournament in Yaounde, Cameroon on Thursday.
Jonas won the gold medal in the 64kg welterweight category after his opponent withdrew due to injury.
In the semifinals, Jonas beat Mahaman Smaila of Cameroon.
Hamunyela reached the 56kg bantamweight final after beating Sibusiso Bandla of South Africa in the semifinals. Hamunyela however had to withdraw from the final after picking up an injury in his semifinal victory, but as the losing finalist and silver medallist he has now also qualified for the Olympics.
The two boxers’ qualification brings the total of Namibian athletes to have qualified for the Rio Olympics to six so far.
They are cyclists Dan Craven and a female cyclist, still to be determined; shooter Gaby Ahrens, marathon runner Beata Naigambo; and boxers Jonas and Hamunyela.
