NAMIBIA Basketball Federation (NBF) president Talitha Jario was ousted from her position on Saturday.Former vice president Iipumbu Sakaria is now in charge.
Jario found out about her sudden axing on Saturday after she excused herself from the federation’s annual general meeting (AGM), which then elected a new executive committee in her absence. She went into town to buy items needed for the national basketball championships, which were also taking place in the city.Regional representatives at the AGM apparently felt that Jario was not serving the sport properly.NBF secretary general George Kamati, who retained his position for the next four years, told The Namibian Sport yesterday that the regions tabled a motion of no confidence and demanded the election of a new executive committee.Jario was the only person who got the boot from the executive committee, with the rest retaining their positions. The new committee will now have Sakaria as president, Claudette Gustavo as the vice president for internal affairs and Hofni Kapolo as the new vice president for external affairs.Petrus Kamatoto remains as financial director and Celestino Antonio stays on as marketing director. The additional members, Vonny Boysen and Alvin Mabuku, also retained their positions.Approached for comment, Jario said she was shocked by the decision, as she had no prior knowledge that elections would be held. She said the members had planned her unceremonious dumping from the body, which she has only served for a year.Jario did not want to elaborate further on the issue, but said she would make sure that the constitution of the body was investigated and justice done. The Namibian Sport has also learnt that the Namibia Sports Commission (NSC) is keen to find out what exactly happened at the AGM.Meanwhile, the Khomas region has won the men’s and women’s titles at the national championships, where seven regions competed. The Kavango men’s team won second place, while Oshana came second in the women’s competition. In third place were Oshana (men) and Kavango (women).Freddy Amushendje and Cornelia Nainda were voted the most valuable players, while Raymond Goaeb was named as the most promising player. The best development teams were Kunene (men) and Erongo (women). The most disciplined team was Oshana, while Chile Mapanda was voted as the best match official. The best official was John Muhongo.
