Jan Möhr school management appeals for calm

THE Jan Möhr Secondary School management has called on the public to remain calm and allow the police to do their work, following an incident in which a teacher allegedly raped a pupil last week.

A 53-year-old mathematics teacher allegedly raped a 19-year-old Grade 11 pupil at the school premises, during school hours, on Wednesday last week.

In a statement on Sunday, the school’s board chairperson, Kenneth Uirab, said the relevant authorities were informed as soon as the matter was brought to the attention of the management.

The pupil has since registered charges against the teacher, who was arrested on Saturday after going to the school to hand in his resignation.

Uirab added that the pupil was taken to a medical facility for relevant tests to be conducted. Once available, the test results would be made available to the police to assist with their investigation.

“We therefore appeal for calm and to allow the Namibian Police as the competent authority to duly investigate the matter and ensure that the suspect faces the full wrath of the law, if found guilty,” Uirab added.

He further noted that the school’s board and management found out only recently that similar incidents had taken place previously but had not been reported.

Uirab called on pupils with credible information to contact the school and the police for appropriate action to be taken.

“The school board and management will engage relevant authorities to enlist the services of social workers to provide counseling services to all the affected learners and teachers,” he noted.
