Italian help for needy children

ABOUT 640 children from the informal settlements around Windhoek are being supported by the Italian organisation Terre Des Hommes Italis (TDH) and will continue to benefit from its help for the next three years.

The organisation stated helping the children with their education, health, nutrition and psychosocial needs last year. It works closely with the Hope Initiative and the Family Hope Sanctuary.TDH believes that it is necessary to work with well-established community-based organisations rather than giving the money directly to the school.”If we pay the school directly and the child stops going to school, no one would notice or care,” says Paola Colombo, country representative of TDH.Children need education but they also need a caring and safe environment, which is provided by the community-based organisations.TDH and the Hope Initiative Programme at the Okahandja Park Informal Settlement are currently supporting 340 orphans and vulnerable children with school fees and other essentials to help them get a decent start in life. The Dr Frans Aupa Indongo School in the Babylon informal settlement received a donation of N$29 400, which is the equivalent of the school fees for all 140 children attending the school for one year.TDH has an extensive database of all 640 children that it supports and can thus follow their progress.Numerous organisations have recently come to the aid of children living in the informal sectors around Windhoek. The parents of these children can ill-afford to provide a meal to their children, let alone sending them to school.Assistance provided by organisations such as TDH, according to the parents, will give a secure future to these children.
