IPC councillor arrested over stock theft

An Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) councillor was on Monday arrested in connection with stock theft at Kalkrand in the Hardap region.

The councillor is the vice chairperson of the Kalkrand Village Councils management committee.

Deputy police commissioner Eric Clay says the suspect was found in possession of stolen meat.

“The police responded to a tip-off from the public and were directed to where suspected stolen meat was taken.

“This happened to be the house of the vice chairperson.

“Unfortunately he could not give a satisfactory answer to where he got the meat from, and was arrested,” Clay says.

He says the start of December is marked by an increase in stock theft.

Clay says should farmers be missing small stock they should get in touch with the local police.

A second suspect was arrested in the same case.

Both suspects are expected to appear in the Mariental Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

Police investigations continue.
