Inter-Parliamentary Union honours Speaker Theo-Ben Gurirab

THE Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) has bestowed the coveted title of honorary president of the body to the National Assembly Speaker, IPU honours Speaker Gurirab at the end of his three-year term as IPU president.

Gurirab’s term of office came to an end when he handed over the presidency to Speaker of the Moroccan House of Representatives, Abdelwahad Radi at the 125th assembly of the IPU in Geneva, Switzerland in the middle of October. Swapo Party chief whip Peter Katjavivi congratulated Gurirab on the ‘splendid’ manner in which he guided the work of the IPU during his term. Gurirab said that today’s global challenges demand an analysis of governance of international institutions and the interplay between nations and processes. During his tenure, the IPU recognised its strategic road map that will guide the work of the organisation. The IPU has also played a leading role in debating the effects of the worldwide economic and financial crisis, and to determine what parliaments, governments and the international community can do to mitigate the negative effects on people’s livelihoods. Gurirab has also been the president of the 54th session of the United Nations General Assembly in 1999 and 2000, during which time he was instrumental in driving the UN reform process that drafted the UN Millennium Summit in September 2000. That summit defined the Millennium Development Goals. Gurirab was Namibia’s Foreign Minister from 1990 to 2002, and then served as the Prime Minister from 2002 to 2005.
