Indonesian Culture Showcased in Film Festival at FNCC

Indonesian Film Week festival is back after the success of last year and five movies will be screened at the Franco-Namibian Cultural Centre (FNCC) Cinema from 4 August until 8 August.

Don’t worry about any language barriers as each movie will include English subtitles. Here is an exclusive look into what you can expect:

Directed by Garin Nugroho, ‘Soegija’ is an epic history drama adapted from the book ‘The Testimony of a Bishop in a Revolutionary War: A Diary of Monsignor Alb. Soegijapranata SJ’ by G. Budi Subanar SJ.

Although the movie revolves around the road to Indonesia’s independence, Segijapranata’s ordination as the first ‘Bishop of Java’ plays a significant role in the war, giving viewers an in-depth look into both Dutch and Japanese colonialism in the 1940s. ‘Soegija’ will be screened on Monday, 4 August at 18h30.

‘5cm’ tells the story about five best friends who go on an adventurous climbing trip to the top of the tallest volcano in Java: Mahameru Peak. The journey enlightens all with strengthening friendships, separations and love. Astonishing visuals earned the movie the 2013 Indonesian Film Festival’s award for the best cinematography. Expect it on Tuesday, 5 August at 18h00.

Next up, ‘Merantau’ will be screened on 6 August at 18h00. The title refers to an ancient tradition where young boys have to leave their village in order to prove their manhood before they return back home.

‘Merantau’ follows young Yuda through his voyage into the city. While there, he happens to save a stripper from her pimp but the consequences that follow are dire. For action lovers, you’ll get an awesome demonstration of the martial art of silat that promises loads of high kicks and svelte moves. Leave the kids at home for this one.

For more, catch ‘Berbagi Suami (Love for Share)’ and ‘Lovely Man’ on 7 and 8 August respectively at 18h00.

Traditional fabrics from Indonesia will also be exhibited during the duration of the film week, so best to stock up your wallets or purses with a few extra notes.
