The High Commission of India on Monday marked the country’s 77th Republic Day with a special ceremony in Windhoek on Monday.
Indian high commissioner to Namibia Rahul Shrivastava, in his official speech, said prime minister Narendra Modi’s state visit to Namibia last year, which was the first by an Indian prime minister in 27 years, was a major turning point in the two countries’ bilateral relations.
“The cooperation between the two countries is closer than ever, with progress in areas such as trade, health, capacity building and sport,” he said.
Deputy minister of international relations and trade Jenelly Matundu at the ceremony said Modi’s 2025 visit, the successful cheetah translocation project from Namibia to India, and the Asian country’s drought relief assistance were all evidence of the two countries’ growing diplomatic ties.
Matundu said Namibia is looking to further strengthen these relations, particularly in trade, information and communication technology, and education.
India Republic Day is commemorated on 26 January annually to mark the adaptation of the country’s constitution.
