Independence celebrations in Windhoek

THIS year’s 30th independence celebrations and the inauguration of president Hage Geingob will be held in Windhoek at an estimated budget of N$1 million, down from N$2,5 million spent last year, the ministry of information said yesterday.

This year’s main event will take place at Windhoek’s Independence Stadium in Olympia.

The ministry’s executive director, Mbeuta Ua-Ndjarakana, could not confirm which delegates would be joining the celebrations, but promised that the month of March will be filled with cultural performances and celebrations.

“Preparations are currently in full swing and various sub-committees under the National Committee on National Events are activated and tasked with various functions to ensure this will be a memorable celebration,” he said.

The executive director added: “Celebration does not mean that you should have resources in abundance, you should be carrying the spirit of appreciating what we have achieved. We will be moving on a very lean budget.”

He urged the nation to unite and ‘jealously guard’ the hard-earned independence and cherish the peace, stability and tranquillity the country continues to enjoy.

Ua-Ndjarakana said the celebration is a reminder that Namibia’s freedom was attained after a long and protracted struggle for independence against colonialism.

On that same day, MTC announced, via its social media, that it will be hosting a music concert to celebrate Namibia’s milestone at the Hage Geingob Stadium.

The line-up will include both African and local artistes such as Nigerian duo Tiwa Savage and D’Banj, and South African house maestro Master KG. Local artistes include Gazza, Exit, Adora and Lioness.
