If Swapo Is What Swapo Was

If Swapo Is What Swapo Was

I’M one of those Namibian kids who grew up living Swapo.

I supported them, as I knew that these people really suffered, so they know the circumstances of the country. But what disappoints me is how they’ve changed after gaining control. At their election campaigns, they roar, ‘One Namibia, One Nation’, but to me it sounds like ‘One Namibia, Led by One Nation’.They only care about the people when it’s election time, and after that, it’s every man for himself.Old people are being evicted from their homes with no source of income but the pension; more youth are roaming the streets; HIV is increasing, hospitals lacks proper medication and doctoring; schools lack proper equipment, but instead, the government engages in multi-million dollar luxuries like the state house, Heroes Acre etc.Instead of sidestepping things like these examples, they should concentrate on the lives of the people. One can imagine how many houses the GRN could have built with so much money. It disappoints me so much that the people we suffered together with have forgotten the effects of poverty.Listening to Swapo’s youth league president, one would swear, the year is 1989.I know that apartheid was bad, but it’s part of the past now and we have to forgive. We the up-coming generation want to live in togetherness and harmony. We are taught enough on apartheid in schools; we really don’t want to hear it on television also. The way Kapia addresses the conferences is childish and improper for a youth president. The tone he uses is as if he is addressing school kids and above all, he is too old to be youth. How can a youth leader behave in a manner like this? If Kapia is to be Member of Parliament, then he should act accordingly, and be given another position (army commander) were he would not intoxicate our minds with hatred. If Swapo is really what Swapo was, then, let’s be One Namibia, One Rainbow Nation!Cosby Abisai Via e-mailBut what disappoints me is how they’ve changed after gaining control.
