NEW Kunene governor Marius Sheya yesterday said he will work hard to transform the lives of the people in the region during his tenure.
In an interview with yesterday Sheya, who was appointed governor of Kunene on Friday by President Hage Geingob, said he will serve to “the best of my abilities” and aim to transform the region.
Sheya filled the position left vacant after the death of former governor Angelika Muharukua this year.
He is currently the mayor of Outjo and a member of the Swapo Party Youth League’s central committee.
He said his appointment as governor of Kunene region was evidence that Geingob has faith and trust in placing huge responsibilities such as leadership positions in the hands of the young people in the country.
“This shows that young people can also be given a chance to prove themselves in terms of leadership and transform our society to be able to solve our problems,” Sheya said.
Sheya also said he was “overwhelmed, humbled, and frightened” by the confidence and the trust that the President has placed on him and the young people in the country to take up “huge responsibilities”.
Sheya was one of the young people who worked tirelessly during the President’s campaign in the run-up to the Swapo party elective congress.
The appointment will be effective from 1 January 2018 and will be for a period of two years until 20 March 2020, said presidential minister Frans Kapofi in a statement.
Sheya, however, could not expound on the successes or failures he encountered during his tenure as the mayor of Outjo.
“I will be in a better position if I sit with you and I show you what I have done at Outjo in black and white,” said Sheya.
