John Travolta has a very particular set of skills in ‘I am Wrath’ (2016). A revenge film by numbers starring Travolta, Christopher Meloni, Rebecca de Mornay, Amanda Schull and Sam Trammell.
Playing much like ‘Taken’, the film sees a retired covert operative seek vengeance for the brutal murder of his wife in a city beset with gun violence. With biblical undertones reminiscent of ‘The Boondock Saints’ (1999) and Travolta’s ageing operative undoubtedly set in the mould of Neeson’s Bryan Mills, ‘I am Wrath’ surprises in the fact that it’s not completely terrible.
Entirely derivative whilst echoing real life issues and instances of gun violence, the film’s coup against cliché comes in the form of Travolta who plays the vengeful husband and father with far more heart and soul than Neeson could ever muster. This from beside a wisecracking Meloni who helps him in his quest for retribution.
Typically, the low rung baddies are a brown people doing a white collar’s bidding. Foul-mouthed gangbangers who, for the discerning, are as dispensable as the entire film. See this if you’re a fan of Travolta or of the genre that the cool kids are calling ‘geriaction’.
