I Am a Namibian Girl

I took a few days to prance around Prague, which by the way is a historian’s must see. Although I am a ‘futuristic girl’, I have always been a fan of history because it reminds us of just how much is possible.

We tend to be so caught up in the now, if and when that we forget that we only exist in our current comforts, whatever they may be, because someone went through great lengths to make it possible.

Because someone once believed that we could live like this one day and now his story is our present story. I believe I have a story to tell and although the majority of my story has to do with my fashion career which may seem frugal to many, I will continue to tell it until that breakthrough moment when I no longer have to. In all honesty, that is how every story starts because until that moment, it is really just a story of he said/she said. It only becomes history when you make something out of it.

I have travelled the world and all my travels have led me to one conclusion. I am a Namibian girl.

Whilst in Prague a TV producer asked me why I am in Africa wasting my talent. I often get that question here too. “Why did you come back?” The topic also crops up while out to brunch and talking to Taati Sibolile about how we should elope and take our talents elsewhere. That it would be good to do what we love in places where they would appreciate it, but then it always comes back to that one simple fact. I am a Namibian girl. I told that producer what I will tell anyone that asks, I came back to do something for my country, I came back to leave a piece or even just traces of me and I will not go until I have done so. If you truly believe that your name should be written somewhere at some point and time, then spend your life earning that place in the books of time.

Just remember that it does not matter how small or big the dream you harbour is, as long as the bigger picture is that it makes a difference and a small change in your country. So for your own sanity, do not sit and around tables and change your dreams to suit someone else. Be so grounded that the winds and words of people around you have no sway in your movement.

The thing is, we have many people to advise us, but none to walk us through. So when you fail, fail on your own merits. Oh but honey, when you succeed, need I say more?

You are a Namibian. You are one in two million and some. The world is filled with billions of people, the odds are on your side. Make history.
