Housebreaking suspect arrested

A HOUSEBREAKING suspect was arrested in Windhoek yesterday after a scuffle with Windhoek City Police officers.

When the incident happened in the central town, news immediately circulated on social media that the suspect was arrested for carjacking, but City Police spokesperson Cillie Auala said he was a wanted suspect for a series of break-ins.

Auala said the police received a tip from members of the public about a suspicious car without number plates that was driving along Independence Avenue.

“Our officers were in the vicinity and rushed there just to realise that the description of the vehicle matched the one of the wanted suspect,” she said.

Auala said on seeing the police officers, the suspect jumped into his car, a BMW X5 and attempted to drive off, but one of the officers who was on a motorbike stood in front of the car to block his way, but the suspect kept driving.

“The other officer had to shoot the tyres and forced the suspect’s car to come to a standstill. It seems he was going to run over the officer on the motorbike,” she said.

The suspect is being kept at the Windhoek Central Police Station and it is not clear when he will be moved. Auala also could not say whether he had back-up with him or not.

She said the suspect already had two outstanding warrants of arrest and urged members of the public to rally behind the police to make sure that criminals do not take over the city.

“We have ongoing vigorous operations to ensure criminals are arrested like we did today (yesterday). Members of the public should continue to be the eyes and ears of the police,” she advised.
