Hospital still a rubbish dump

NOT much has changed with the rubbish situation at the Katutura Hospital, and bags of medical and general waste are still piling up outside the hospital.

The Namibian first reported on the situation in mid-July, after which a private refuse-removal company and city authorities promised to resolve the problem. Almost three months later, cockroaches, rats, stray dogs and cats are still scavenging on the heaps of rubbish, and late at night even people can be seen rummaging through the bags, a doctor at the hospital told The Namibian yesterday.Although the entrances to the Katutura Hospital and the Windhoek Central Hospital are controlled by security guards, the fence which runs next to the road between the two hospitals is broken at many places, allowing people unlimited access. At the Windhoek Central Hospital’s living quarters for doctors and nurses, the tennis courts are overgrown and the grounds are clearly not used for recreational purposes.Although the gates are locked, loiterers can enter the grounds through a large hole in the fence.Almost three months later, cockroaches, rats, stray dogs and cats are still scavenging on the heaps of rubbish, and late at night even people can be seen rummaging through the bags, a doctor at the hospital told The Namibian yesterday.Although the entrances to the Katutura Hospital and the Windhoek Central Hospital are controlled by security guards, the fence which runs next to the road between the two hospitals is broken at many places, allowing people unlimited access. At the Windhoek Central Hospital’s living quarters for doctors and nurses, the tennis courts are overgrown and the grounds are clearly not used for recreational purposes.Although the gates are locked, loiterers can enter the grounds through a large hole in the fence.
